Safari Meals

While Tanzania is known for its wildlife, not for its cuisine, you will find the food on safari surprisingly tasty and varied. The local diet is quite simple consisting of bean or meat stews, and hardy fresh vegetables. The staple starch is maize and the most common form is Ugali, which is a stiff form of grits - edible, but not particularly palatable. For this reason most accommodations serve western style cuisine, enhanced with Zanzibar spices, exotic fruits and healthy fresh produce.

The menus themselves vary from simple home-style cooking to gourmet cuisine, depending on the nature of the accommodation. Special dietary requirements can usually be taken into account given advanced notice.

Kid-friendly foods on our Family Safaris
At Thomson Safaris we understand the special needs of those traveling with kids. Our Family Safaris are designed with this in mind. Early mealtimes are arranged for younger travelers and care is taken to make sure menu items include some kid-friendly foods for less adventurous eaters.

Here's a fun story about kids and safari food.

"I must confess that I was not expecting such good food on my trip. The meals created by Freddie and Allie were delicious. They should publish a cookbook."
