DAY 4

Hours trekking: 1-2

DAY 5
SHIRA 1 TO MOIR CAMP (Heath-Alpine Desert)

Explore the 12,500-foot Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus in the world—on your way to the remote edge of the alpine desert. See if you can spot the Shark's Tooth, a large, distinctive lava tower.

Overnight: Moir Camp (13,700’)
Hours trekking: 5-7

DAY 6

Hours trekking: 5-7

DAY 7
POFU TO RONGAI 2 CAVES CAMP (Alpine Desert- Heath)

Descend back into the moorlands to camp along a series of volcanic grottoes. At these lower altitudes you’ll gain strength and energy for the days ahead.

Hours trekking: 5-7

DAY 8
RONGAI 2 CAVES TO KIKELEWA CAVES CAMP (Heath)

Veer off the main trail on your way to Mawenzi Peak’s steep slopes. You'll have a chance to acclimatize today as you explore the strange plantlife, eerie rock formations, and caves surrounding your camp.

Overnight: Kikelewa Caves Camp (11,850’)
Hours trekking: 3-5

DAY 9
KIKELEWA CAVES TO MAWENZI TARN CAMP (Heath-Alpine Desert)

Your next camp is located next to a placid lake at the foot of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest volcanic cone. Enjoy magnificent views of Mawenzi’s cathedral-like spires and Kibo’s peak in the distance.

Hours trekking: 4-6

DAY 10
MAWENZI TARN TO OUTWARD BOUND CAMP (Alpine Desert)

Trek across “The Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo, where you’ll have truly awe-inspiring views of Uhuru peak. The temperature will drop as you near your camp at the foot of Kibo. Rest up in preparation for tomorrow’s summit bid.

Overnight: Outward Bound Camp (15,450’)
Hours trekking: 5-7

DAY 11
OUTWARD BOUND CAMP TO THE SUMMIT TO CRATER CAMP (Alpine Desert-Arctic Zone)

Wake just before dawn to begin your trek to the summit, reaching Uhuru Peak in the early afternoon (when you may even have it to yourselves!). Enjoy the view from the "Roof of Africa" before the short descent to Crater Camp, near the retreating ice walls of the Furtwangler Glacier, or take an optional trek to the Ash Pit.

Overnight: Crater Camp (18,802’)
Hours trekking: 7-10 to Summit/1-2 to Crater Camp
