b7ad Mount Kilimanjaro Porter Ethics

Porter Ethics

By trekking with Thomson, you empower porters. All of our trekkers are V.I.P.s, as are the people who make this journey possible. Our expert porters carry the majority of your belongings and set up and break down each campsite. We provide the highest porter compensation packages on the mountain, including bonuses for bringing down refuse left by other companies on the mountain.

We ensure that every porter on every trek has a hat, gloves, proper footwear, warm layers, sleeping bag, and mountaineering glasses. This costs more, but it’s worth it. Unfortunately, poor treatment of porters is an epidemic on the mountain, and budget climbs directly exploit them. We are dedicated to treating our porters with respect, even if it costs more.

Only Thomson porters are outfitted in professional all-weather climbing uniforms. They each are provided closed-cell sleeping pads and comfortable tented accommodations.

We lead by example as a founding member of the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project. Establishing and monitoring standards for porter wages, medical care, and appropriate attire, this initiative stands up for a group of people who are continually exploited by companies and climbers. We donate all proceeds from our online Kilimanjaro Store to this noble project, as well as match contributions given by guests. The director of the initiative recently climbed with us and said:

“I realize that I was extremely fortunate to have climbed Kili with Thomson Safaris and that this is not the typical experience on the mountain. I have nothing but high praises for the quality of work and care that was provided for me. Nashukuru sana (I am very grateful)!”
