Full Itinerary

Days 1-2
Depart North America / Arrive Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). A guide will meet you there and escort you to your Arusha lodge.

Overnight: Rivertrees Country Inn

Days 3-4
Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge

Fly from Arusha to a private nature refuge in the Eastern Serengeti ecosystem, exclusive to Thomson guests. Your Thomson guide will take you from the airstrip to the first of several Nyumba camps, which blend luxurious modern touches with the authentic experience of tented safaris. Guided wildlife walks and night wildlife-viewing drives (an opportunity rarely available in parks), are balanced with visits to nearby Maasai communities.

Overnights: Eastern Serengeti Nyumba

Watch the VIDEO HIGHLIGHT to learn more about the Eastern Serengeti Nature Refuge.

Days 5-8
Serengeti National Park

With over 6,000 square miles of diverse landscapes and thousands upon thousands of animals, it’s no wonder that Serengeti National Park is Africa’s most iconic safari destination. Spend four days seeking out the Great Migration and the big cats the park is known for. Nyumba camps move seasonally to optimize wildlife viewing year-round.

Join an optional hot air balloon ride to take in sweeping views of the Serengeti from above. (Advanced reservations and additional fees apply).

Overnights: Serengeti Nyumbas

Day 9
Ngorongoro Crater

Just 10 miles wide, the Ngorongoro Crater, formed from a collapsed volcano, is a totally self-contained ecosystem with the densest mammal populations in all of Africa. Camping on the crater rim gives you early access to this popular location; you’ll reach the floor well before other groups. Seek out all of the Big Five species (lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and black rhinoceros) during your visit.

Overnight: Ngorongoro Nyumba

Days 10-11
Ngorongoro Highlands

With gorgeous gardens plotted over lush, rolling hills; luxurious rooms with private verandahs; and spectacular farm-to-table dining; it’s no wonder Gibb’s Farm has been rated the top property in Tanzania by Conde Nast Traveler readers. This 80-year-old working coffee estate is a stunning retreat in the heart of the highlands. Enjoy optional spa services, guided walks through the grounds, or visits to local artists-in-residence during your stay.

Overnights: Gibb’s Farm

Days 12-13
Return to North America

Head back to Arusha to share a farewell lunch at River House, a community-run nonprofit organization. The adjoining arts center displays the beautiful crafts of local disabled artisans, (whose training is funded by River House), and is a perfect place to pick up a final souvenir. Rest in a day room before your flight.

Day room: Mount Meru Hotel

Extend your discoveries with one of our optional trip extensions. Stroll the colorful streets on the island of Zanzibar … catch intimate glimpses of gorillas in the Virunga Mountains … search for wildlife across uncharted plains in Ruaha National Park … and more.

Optional Hot Air Balloon Excursion: $550

Rivertrees Country Inn

Reminiscent of its legacy as a former German colonial farm and coffee estate, Rivertrees Country Inn blends simple elegance and modern convenience. Wake up in your farmhouse-style room to the sound of the rushing Usa River, and enjoy a hearty breakfast in an open-air, thatched-roof dining area.

Eastern Serengeti Nyumba

Wake up with a hot shower in your ensuite bathroom, and marvel at sweeping views of the eastern Serengeti ecosystem’s remote savannah. After a day of adventure, you’ll appreciate the comforts of the camp. Enjoy a hearty dinner prepared fresh from local ingredients, and discuss the day’s excitement with your fellow travelers and attentive staff.

Serengeti Nyumbas

These semi-permanent, seasonal camps are strategically plotted across the Serengeti according to wildlife migration patterns. Each location offers comfort in the heart of the wilderness. With spacious tents, cozy bedding, and ensuite bathrooms, you’ll have to take a look outside to be reminded that you’re deep in the bush. And no need to worry—with eco-friendly features like solar lighting, your stay won't harm the landscape.

Ngorongoro Nyumba

The Ngorongoro camp is set on the eastern edge of the Ngorongoro Crater’s rim and offers the best possible access in and out of the crater, as well as a more private, remote experience. In the morning, you have the eastern floor of the crater almost completely to yourself.  In the evenings, when you return to camp, you'll be greeted with the hospitality that is a hallmark of all our camps.  Settle in to your spacious tent, enjoy a hot safari-shower in your ensuite facilities, head to the campfire for a drink before dinner, and enjoy a traditional Tanzanian meal -- a specialty of the camp chefs here.  Don't forget to bundle up at this camp, as temperatures can be as low as 40 degrees from May to October.

Gibb's Farm

Fresh food, fresh air, and fresh perspectives abound at Gibb’s Farm (2013 and 2014 Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Award winner). At the end of full days of exploration, relax in your eco-friendly cottage, set amidst the farm’s lush gardens. You can even ask the attentive staff to provide insight into local culture and history.

Mount Meru Hotel

The Mount Meru Hotel has been a mainstay of Arusha accommodations since it opened in the 1960's, when Tanzania tourism was still in its infancy.  It was recently renovated top to bottom, and the finished product is even better than the original. With reliable modern conveniences, a variety of dining options, a beautiful pool, and a central location, it is one of the best places to start or end your safari or trek.
